Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

One of my new favorites in the south central PA area. If you have experienced El Sol in Harrisburg and restaurants in the Harrisburg area, let me make the following comparison. El Sol Express is what Cafe Fresco on Paxton is to the one downtown. The portions of the food are ample, and I have eaten there 3 times in the last 2 weeks, both in the restaurant and take out. Prices are very, very reasonable, I have had the chips and salsa, the shrimp burrito, beef fajitas and the pork tacos... all were excellent! Location is in a strip mall on Hartzdale, and parking is plentiful. The interior is open and nice. I recommend El Sol Express and plan on grabbing a burrito there before I go out of town for a few days. Makes a wonderful welcome for my house sitter:-).

As s former southern California resident I've been searching for a Good Mexican restaurant. I finally found it.

More like a 3.5, but I'll round up because I'm still feeling full, which is pretty impressive since I worked through lunch and was feeling sick, achy, and starving. Quick google search yielded El Sol and boom, I was there for an early dinner. The restaurant is clean and inviting with clay-colored tiles and a layout designed for a quick, casual visit. The menu was daunting in size and variety (one day I'll be a man and order a beef tongue taco), but I eventually settled on the Huevos con Chorizo Burrito and a personal side of chips and salsa to go; add a regular drink and it all came to roughly $10. The Huevos con Chorizo Burrito was banging. Spicy, yet relatively mild from a heat standpoint, and bursting with a unique tangy flavor. It also came with a chunky guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The only downside was that they cut the burrito in half and kept the toppings separate from each other. This works for in-house eating, but it's a huge mess to chow down on from a take-out tin. I also prefer burritos to be the same temperature throughout, not cold on one side and hot on the other. Maybe I'll ask them not to cut it next time. The tortilla chips were still warm from the frier, but I can only give a meager half-thumbs up to the salsa. It's a thin, well pureed, extremely tomatoey restaurant salsa. Sure, it tasted fresh, but it was more "refreshing" than flavorful, and lacked any heat whatsoever. Overall, I was happy and it was a great deal for the price. Definitely one of the better Mexican restaurants in the area.

Stopped in for a quick lunch today, and based on how much we love the 3rd Street El Sol, we were really excited. It ended up being ok. The place had a relaxed and really casual vibe. Really fast and super friendly service, impressive. I had the grilled fish tacos, and it was a bit heavy on the spicy sauce which covered up the really flavorful fish that I expected, having loved the ones on 3rd st. Boyfriend had the fajita burrito, which he said was good but a little bland. Overall it's pretty good. If you want a really spectacular Mexican experience, I'd go to the original El Sol, but this is definitely a good quick stop.

I was a big fan of El Sol Express, but I find that under the new ownership that the dishes aren't quite as 'tasty'. I had the shrimp taco and the grilled fish taco last night, and while they were good, they lacked the flavor they had before. I wonder ... It seems that they are lacking that great fresh lime flavor. They put a lemon wedge on my platter, and i really think it should have been a lime. I hear there's a lime shortage - or limes are more expensive recently... Could the lack of flavor recently be chaulked up to them not using limes as usual? Just my observation.

I have to agree with a fellow reviewers that El Sol Express is the Best Mexican in the Harrisburg area hands down! This place is amazing. The service is fast. The staff is super nice and the food is unexpectedly gourmet!!!! Also, this place is kid friendly, almost every time I have gone there has been families eating with their children. Seriously you have to try this place! I promise you wont be disappointed! I have been here many times for lunch and dinner, done take out and dine-in and everything has always been awesome! I have ordered most things on the menu and they are always so good and attractively presented! You can tell everything is made with the freshest ingredients!!!

Ok, you really should go someplace more than once for an honest opinion, but it's easy to see that this place has it right. It's not a "wow', but it a very solid, 'very good'. Fresh, friendly, fast, fair prices and larger portion. I had the smothered burrito, wasn't a fan of the red sauce, but that did not detract from the overall experience. Large enough to feed 2, I managed to get it down because I was on my own today. It's going to be a pricier place for lunch, but I refuse to 'eat because I'm hungry', I like my food to taste good. And I'll pay for that privilege. Give it a try. It's not a cookie cutter, greasy spoon type of place. The menu while large, may not have your favorites. (No fried chicken chimichanga here.) But the menu has a fresh consistent theme, and I can't wait to try more of what they have to offer.

Food was great and came out fast. Coming from NY I have pretty high expectations of Mexican or Spanish food but this place was actually pretty decent for PA. Clean and neat.

Fresh dishes, many options. We have tried different burritos, all good. I just got the shrimp tacos, so good! Love the chips and salsa. The guac is also good. They have extra hot sauces made from different types of peppers over by the napkins and soda machine. I love to try the different levels of spicy and variety. Nice in the sense that if you don't have much time, it is easy to get a good meal quickly and be on your way. It's pay at register before you eat, food is served very quickly. Best burritos around.

Just as good as their eat-in counterpart in Harrisburg, a great meal to go, or to have a casual night out, limited seating. They'll give you a number and bring food to your table, we prefer to get take out here but are never disappointed in our meals. My husband gets their mahi special an we call ahead to see if they have it typically, but go regardless, it is quite good but so are their spicy homemade sauces, self serve in the back of the room, great tacos and good for vegetarians as well!

When I worked nearby, I'd eat here at least once a week. I've tried the majority of their menu & never had a bad meal. The staff is friendly, the service is quick & place is very clean. I cannot recommend it highly enough! It's BYOB, but there's no corking fee or other charge.

I just have to add this . . . we've eaten here several times and each time the food is great. I CRAVE the ceviche and order it almost every time we go there. Tres Hermanos still wins in the taco category . . . but this place is great for everything else. Did I mention the ceviche? ;)

Best Mexican in the Harrisburg area hands down.

We love this place! It is tricky to find a good Mexican place around here. I have been to the original el sol and thought it was great. We eat at el sol express about 2 or 3 times a month and are never dissapointed. I highly recomend the grilled fish tacos, and make sure you get the limes with it. My other standard dish is the veggie quesadillas.

Ate here today and the food was awesome. Place was clean, service quick and personable. Great freshness, presentation and the fish tacos were amazing.

I always have a pleasant experience at El Sol in downtown Harrisburg and this satellite restaurant wasn't any different. The atmosphere is a combination of the downtown location mixed with a taquerÃa that one would find in a Mexican neighborhood. The menu consists of a large selection of tacos and burritos, along with other popular Mexican dishes. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions were larger than expected. I did have take-out, which surprised me with the portions provided. I recommend the carne asada tacos.

I tried El Sol Express on a whim a few weeks ago. My husband and I both liked it, but weren't really blown away. He had a smothered burrito and fish tacos. I was sad to see very few vegetarian options. I usually have no trouble finding a good vegetarian selection at Mexican restaurants, but not at El Sol. I had a bean burrito since that was one of the only vegetarian options. I was disappointed that their refried beans contained pork product and I had to get the whole pinto beans instead. Meh... not my favorite. Still, the burrito was ok and had a nice fresh flavor. Our meals came with rice, sour cream, and guacamole, which is always a plus. However, I wasn't a fan of their guacamole. It was hardly mashed and it had an excessive amount of citrus. I really like that they serve Coke products, because Diet Pepsi is nasty. I also liked their chips and salsa. I'll probably go back since it is pretty close to my office, but honestly, I'd rather spend less money and get a bigger and tastier burrito at Neato.

I had never been to the El Sol flagship restaurant in Harrisburg, but I had heard good things. When I read that they had opened up a new location in Hartzdale Plaza, I thought I'd check it out. The restaurant is in the space previously occupied by Sugar Mamma's, and Coyote Joe's prior to that. Those who've visited this space before, know that the interior layout wasn't the greatest. El Sol has opened up the space and it looks ten times better. The layout of the restaurant (which is quick-service) includes booths along the right side of the restaurant and open tables on the left. You order at the counter, get your drink and seat yourself. When your food is ready, it is brought out to your table. The menu will look fairly familiar to folks who have visited the Harrisburg location. The Express menu seems to have much of the same look as the menu you can find on the flagship's website. Think tacos, burritos, salads, as well as apppetizers like chips and salsa or guac, ceviche and flautas. Entrees include enchiladas and huevos rancheros. I orderd a chicken taco and a carne asada taco ($2.75 each), along with a personal size order of chips and salsa ($1.99). The chips were brought out immediately with a small bowl of salsa and the tacos soon followed. The chips and salsa were good. Nothing great, but pretty solid and homemade. I really enjoyed the tacos. They use corn tortillas which I really like. Both tacos were good, but I found the chicken to be more flavorful than the steak. I'll be back to try the guac and the enchiladas.

This is one of my favorite places to eat. The food at El Sol Express has a very different (and wonderfully fresh) taste to it compared with the other Mexican restaurants of the area. If you're familiar with El Sol in Harrisburg, this differs in that you get your own drinks and silverware and the people working there bring out the entrees and clear the dishes. Also, this location has great parking, especially when compared to the Harrisburg location. The iced tea is fantastic. The people working there are exceptionally nice. We have never been disappointed with our lunch or dinners here.

Sometimes I just have to have a fish taco....and theirs always hit the spot!

I tried this placed based on other reviews and have not been disappointed. I've been there maybe 6 or 7 times in the past six months. Every time I go in I end up trying one of the specials and they've all been good. The thing I like most about their food is that it is and tastes fresh. It's not just a re-arrangement of "glop" like you find in a lot of other so-called Mexican restaurants. Prices are good, the woman at the counter is always cheerful and friendly, decor is decent. I'll be going back regularly.

My husband and I eat here at least once a month. We love El Sol downtown and this is just as good. I always get a taco salas, either chicken or beef and it is always fresh and huge. I ask for a take out container right away and take half to go. My husband mixes it up and gets different tacos, burritos, or enchiladas, he is never disappointed. the chips and salsa are always fresh, not too spicy but with a little kick, think "medium". This is our go to place for quick, delicious Mexican food on the West Shore.

Wanted to give this place a try. I was feeling Fajita-y and the wife wanted a standard beef burrito. The prices were ok for the portions we got, I had more peppers then anything else on my plate and they did bring me more wraps when asked. The meat was pretty good but felt it could have had a little more seasoning to it. The burrito was not finished, while flavor was ok, the issue was there wasn't something "quite right" about it. Not like bad or anything, just didn't have something that as needed according to the wife. Maybe she should have added some hot sauce or something, it seemed ok to me. But then again, I'm a guy, anything with beef will be "ok" to me.

If this is authentic then those places in Mexico are trying too hard! But it's good for the price and convenience when Mexico is just too far away!
(3)Mohun K.
I've eaten here twice in one week. Huge fan of the original location, so was glad to finally try this place. My work moved to Simpson Ferry, so this is really close now. I had the chicken soft tacos and chicken crunchy tacos. Both were on lunch special and came with a drink. Both dishes were good. The soft tacos were a little soggy as I proceeded through the dish - I imagine it's from the juice of the shredded chicken. But still good. Look forward to trying new dishes here. Only downside, no alcohol.

I've said it about the downtown Harrisburg location, and this location is no different. Amazing food, especially the chips and salsa. I ausually get the chicken enchiladas verdes and it has never disappointed.

Shocked by the reviews on here. I lived in Mexico and this is the worst Mexican place I've ever eaten at. It was as if they combined some of the ingredients to be unique, but the flavors did not work well together. I had the mixed taco plate so I got to try a variety of things and my co-diners said the same thing about their meals. Really disappointed after reading the other reviews here.
(1)Sandy S.
Bland food - waste if money. Not tex-mex or even sw - perhaps an obscure Mexican regional cuisine. Will never return. Rather visit taco bell.
(2)Ashley L.
Had the taco platter, my choices were shrimp, steak, and chicken. They were all very good I liked the lemon wedge to squeeze over them that was an unexpected surprise. They were smaller than I thought they were going to be but none the less filling and the flavours were spot on.
(4)Nikki B.
One of our favorite places for Mexican carry out. Chips and guacamole are super fresh. Smothered burrito is amazing. We live in York and get this for carry out every chance we get when we're in Camp Hill. The down town location is better for a weekend date night just cause the ambiance is fancier and there's alcohol. But... Food quality is great at both places. Definitely recommend!!
(5)John G.
Small place in a strip mall nothing fancy here, large Burritos and decent priced. Might be a little higher priced than Neato Burito or Chipolte but it offers a different menu than both of them with a Mexican style and Taste! If you got the Stomach for it try their Habanero Chili sauce with your meal. Any of their sauces marked hot are! Quick- Clean and close! A great option!
(4)John D.
Very good food. For how busy it was today, service was great. They had one waitress serving, bussing, and doing dishes. Kudos to her. She was busting her hump. Floor was a little sticky, but no biggie. Will be back for sure... Ol'e
